The term "community health" refers to the health status of a defined group of people, or community, and the actions and conditions that protect and improve the health of the community. Community Health Department of ESSS aims at good health at low cost and with social justice by working in collaboration with like minded partners.
As part of building self reliant and healthy communities, ESSS involves in the promotion of preventive, curative & rehabilitative measures in the field of community health. The notable programmes are specialized medical camps, Eye Camps, Awareness Programmes on Health & Waste Management and preventive medicine distribution.

In collaboration with Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), ESSS has been implementing Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme in selected places. The main programmes are TB Advocacy, Community Awareness, Sensitization for School Children.
Over the last few years Kerala witnessed a dramatic increase in number of cancer patients creating panic among general public. The changes in life style, over dependence on foods and vegetables from other states, unscientific and over usage of pesticides by farmers contributed this kind of increase in number of cancer patients in Kerala. This even questioned the much appreciated success of Kerala Model of Development in health sector. The high cost of cancer drugs and treatment increased the burden of people in the state. The modern treatments are not available in all government hospitals. All this created a mess-up in health sector of Kerala. This prompted ESSS to join hands with Caritas India in Starting Asakiranam Cancer Care Project with the aim of creating a self-reliant community which enable to take preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of cancer disease. The Main components of the project are Local Fund Mobilization, Cancer Awareness, Financial Aid to Deserving Cancer Patients, Medical & Psychological Support and the Promotion of Organic Farming.
ESSS initiated palliative care unit, aiming at providing better accessibility of palliative care system to the common people . It is also offering social, emotional support for home based palliative care to the needy under the operational area of ESSS.
Micro insurance is specifically designed for the protection of low -income people, with affordable insurance products to help them cope with and recover from common risks. It is a market-based mechanism that promises to support sustainable livelihoods by empowering people to adapt and withstand stress. ESSS department of Micro Insurance Promotes General insurance (Universal Health Insurance and Personal Accident Policy) and life insurance schemes (Jeevan Madhur & Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana)
ESSS conducts medical insurance through United India Insurance Company since 2003. The premium for a single person is Rs.800/- for a five member family it is Rs.1400/-and for a seven member family it is Rs. 1700/- The medi- claim policy sum assured Rs.50000/-also covers a death claim of RS.100000/
Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY) is a scholarship linked life insurance policy with premium subsidy from the Central Government. The policy holder gets a normal death cover of Rs.30, 000 and accidental death cover of Rs.75, 000/-. Jeevan Madhur is a savings related life insurance plan where one may pay premium regularly. Ie. weekly, monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly depending on the terms of the policy.
Children are future of our family and society, so budding future is essentially related with the nurturing and developing children in our society. Through the Child Development Programme ESSS primarily organize children in the age group of 5 -17 in Self Help Group model under the banner of Kuttikkoottam. The core objectives of this group are personality development and scholastic development of the children. The Kuttikkoottam groups organize and promote programmes and platforms for nurturing the innate talents of children.Other important programmes include
Every year, ESSS provides sponsorship to deserving students from poor families for studies in higher classes & secondary schools. This is achieved by partnership of generous donors & supporters. Apart from financial support the programme also aims at the psychological well being, personality development, career guidance, life skill development, & counseling of the children. At present, we are supporting 78 children through the Sponsorship Programme.
